Yoga for teens

Being a mum to three daughters, with years of experience teaching in schools, I am aware of the positive effects yoga and movement can have on young peoples' lives.  My practice draws on research by neuroscientists, anatomists and psychologists specialising in adolescent development and my training with the Teen Yoga Foundation.

Through fun asana sequences, classes aim to build young people's strength and flexibility alongside their focus and concentration. Students have fed back that they feel part of a community and see improvements in their posture, coordination and confidence. Classes incorporate relaxation, gentle breathing exercises and subtle yoga philosophy designed to reduce stress, anxiety and promote self-care.

Yoga for HEALTH & LONG COVID
A therapeutic approach

I offer private one-to-one classes focusing on the individual student’s unique anatomy and physiology. For clients with specific health needs I adopt a therapeutic approach and regularly teach students living with Rheumatoid Arthritis, mitochondrial disease and cancer and more recently Long Covid sufferers. This one-to-one work draws on my experience working alongside doctors and osteopaths to create movement and breathing exercises yoga sessions as part of rehabilitation programmes in health care settings.

Long Covid

I have recently been researching how yoga can reduce the effects of Long Covid having experienced post viral symptoms for 12 months myself. I am developing a regular practice incorporating breathing exercises (pranayama) and asana sequencing that focuses on stimulating the Vagus Nerve to activate the parasympathetic nervous system in order to reduce the effects of disautonmia.

I regularly teach weekly classes in the community with highly vulnerable adults and families 'at risk'. I teach a weekly class for young women and their children in South London and deliver a weekly yoga class for adults with learning difficulties in partnership with Dance West.

VINYASA CONNECTED FLOW

GROUP & PRIVATE classes

I teach a connected flow vinyasa practice using a holistic approach to build strength and flexibility throughout the body and mind. Through a series of carefully sequenced asanas, breathing exercises and a yoga nidra, students develop their unique physical potential as well as the ability to mentally rest and restore. The classes focus on physical awareness helping students move freely and fluidly with a sense of challenge and achievement.

Safe and effective alignment is prioritised over the pursuit of complex asanas to ensure the body is not under undue stress.

Yoga for SPORT

Yoga has been proven to enhance performance levels in athletes in many sports including running, cycling, cricket, football and surfing.  Yoga for Sport classes focus on building greater body awareness allowing students to understand how their unique physicality affects their performance. With increased awareness of muscle imbalance and postural misalignment, students are less prone to injury.

The body works more efficiently when it is challenged to move through a broad range of bio-mechanical patterns, therefore adding yoga into a weekly training programme can enhance sporting performance and increase  flexibility.

Yoga for Sport classes focus on the more scientific and physical aspects of yoga popular in the Western world. Research is increasingly showing that adopting breathing techniques into training programmes can positively improve the body's performance therefore awareness of the breath is explored. These classes are ideal for keen sports people of all ages.

CORPORATE YOGA

Yoga Classes for Home or Work-Based Employees

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and increased home working, bespoke online yoga classes can be a great way of improving employees' physical and mental health whilst creating a sense of community. Reuniting employees through a shared de-stressing experience can boost morale, productivity and improve mental health. Classes can be online or face to face and organised at times that cause minimal disruption to an organisation.

Bespoke 'Wellness at Work' Workshops

These workshops can be devised in partnership with organisations to meet key business policy and improve employees’ health and wellbeing. Previous successful events have involved specially tailored desk-based yoga sessions and breathing workshops. Sessions aim to improve posture and reduce work related stress and chronic pain caused caused by static, desk-bound working.

My experience in work based environments includes yoga classes for staff at Capital Bank, London and medical staff at Kings College Hospital London (KCL).

YOGA IN EDUCATION

In the wake of the global pandemic surveys show that more than half of young people feel their mental health has deteriorated.  The new PHSE school curriculum of Self Care recommended by the Ofsted framework, states that schools should provide activities that enhance student’s spiritual, mental and social wellness. I offer yoga classes in schools which form part of a long-term wellbeing programme, with the option of additional classes and training for staff.

Yoga programmes delivered in primary schools have made cross-curricular links with literacy, PHSE and Physical Education through specially devised lessons, resources and CPD training.

I regularly teach in several leading London secondary schools. I create bespoke classes that meet the student's needs and the PHSE and pastoral care agendas.  Classes focus on building physical and mental strength, resilience and relaxation. Students feedback the classes reduce stress and anxiety caused by study, exams and social pressures.

QUALIFICATIONS

I trained with Yoga Campus at The Life Centre London, focusing on the science of yoga (anatomy & physiology), asana sequencing, yoga philosophy, pranayama and meditation. This training adopted an authentic and non-dogmatic approach which ensured I developed my own unique approach to yoga teaching. The 300-hr training course over 18 months included teaching public classes at The Life Centre, Islington.

My teaching has continued to evolve, through self-practice, study with master teachers and interactions with students. Additional intensive training courses I have completed with renowned teachers include: Doug Keller, Donna Fahri, Pete Blackaby and the Teen Yoga Foundation (10 week course), Laurent Roure.

I am an accredited member of Yoga Alliance, Independent Yoga Network and the Register of Exercise Professionals.
